PAO 2 Synano

Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 is an alumina nanoparticle concentrate engineered specifically for Poly Alpha Olefin dielectric base oils used in single-phase immersion cooling. Added directly to PAO-2 fluid already in service, it increases thermal conductivity by up to 6%, improves breakdown voltage by up to 44%, and raises flash point by up to 8°C versus untreated PAO-2 base. No fluid replacement, no system modification, no operational interruption. Developed by Synano’s thermal engineering team, building on research at Delft University of Technology.

PAO-2 is a preferred base fluid for high-performance immersion cooling due to its exceptionally low viscosity, clean synthetic composition, and strong baseline dielectric properties. As rack power density increases, its thermal ceiling becomes the constraint. Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 raises it. Alumina nanoparticle enhancement delivers up to 6% improvement in thermal conductivity and up to 6% improvement in natural convection confirmed by Figure of Merit analysis, translating directly into higher supportable power density.

Validated at two nanoparticle concentration levels. High concentration delivers maximum thermal and dielectric performance. Low concentration maintains viscosity and dielectric dissipation factor close to base fluid levels, making it the right choice for systems where those properties are tightly specified. Tested in partner deployments across Europe and the United States. Non-toxic, non-flammable, and compatible with standard immersion infrastructure from first use.

Features & Benefits

Nano-enhanced thermal conductivity

Up to 6% improvement in thermal conductivity versus untreated PAO-2 base at 40°C, confirmed to ASTM D7896. Higher thermal conductivity raises the heat transfer coefficient directly, allowing systems to carry greater thermal load at the same flow rate and operating temperature. FOM analysis confirms improvement in both natural and forced convection regimes consistent with the alumina nanoparticle loading.

Breakdown voltage. Up to 44% higher.

Breakdown voltage increases from 45 kV in untreated PAO-2 base to 65 kV at high nanoparticle concentration, confirmed to IEC 60156. Low concentration maintains 56 kV. Both concentration levels highly exceed the threshold required for safe direct submersion of live electronics under standard operating conditions, with 56 – 60 kV respectively.

Higher flash point. Safer operation.

Flash point increases by 4 to 8°C versus untreated PAO-2 base, confirmed to ASTM D92. High concentration raises flash point from 164°C to 172°C. Low concentration raises it to 168°C. Unlike mineral oil and GTL formulations where the additive carrier reduces flash point, Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 raises it. A direct safety margin improvement for high-temperature immersion applications.

Viscosity maintained. Pump compatible.

Kinematic viscosity remains close to PAO-2 base fluid levels across both concentration levels, confirmed to ASTM D445. PAO-2 already offers exceptionally low viscosity at approximately 5.1 cSt at 40°C. Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 preserves this advantage while delivering thermal and dielectric improvements. Compatible with existing circulation pumps and immersion tank designs without modification.

Permanent nanoparticle stability

Homogeneous alumina dispersion validated by Tyndall effect laser testing. No phase separation or sedimentation observed in static monitoring. Thermal properties measured after three months were consistent with initial results. Stable across the full operating temperature range from pour point to boiling point. Suspension stability expected to improve further under continuous flow conditions.

Non-toxic. Recyclable.

Non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, non-bioaccumulative. Safer to handle than conventional mineral oil alternatives. Synano operates a spent-fluid take-back program for nanoparticle recovery and responsible processing.

Technical specifications

All values measured at 40°C to stated standards. Two concentration levels available. High concentration delivers maximum thermal and dielectric performance. Low concentration is recommended where viscosity and dielectric dissipation factor must remain close to base fluid specification.

Flash point increases versus untreated PAO-2 base at both concentration levels. This is distinct from the mineral oil and GTL formulations where the additive carrier reduces flash point. Recommended operating range is 20°C to 80°C. High concentration dielectric dissipation factor is elevated versus base. Low concentration is recommended where this is a system constraint.

Usage & Applications

Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 is designed for single-phase immersion cooling environments where rack power density, charge cycle intensity, or continuous electrical load have pushed conventional PAO-2 dielectric oils to their thermal limit.

Applications

Immersion cooling for compute

Direct upgrade for PAO-2 immersion tanks running AI servers, GPU clusters, and high-density compute hardware, with up to 6% more heat removed at the same flow rate, tank, and pump.

Battery immersion cooling

For battery cells/modules where charge and discharge cycles concentrate heat, with dielectric strength around 60 kV eliminating short-circuit risk at the cell surface.

Transformer cooling

Drop-in upgrade for PAO-2 transformer oil systems with up to 6% improvement in heat transfer, breakdown voltage up to 65 kV, and flash point raised by up to 8°C at the same time.

How to use

Synano NanoAdditive™ PAO2 is supplied as a concentrated dispersion for blending into PAO-2 base oil at the required loading, with two concentration levels (low and high) available.

Ensure the immersion system is clean before introducing the treated fluid. Flush to remove residual chemicals, metallic ions, and prior fluid deposits. Drain fully before filling.

Blend into PAO-2 base fluid at the specified loading ratio prior to filling. Do not introduce the concentrate directly into a running system without pre-blending. After commissioning, occasional top-up for evaporation losses is the only expected maintenance. For systems regularly above 80°C or requiring custom loadings, contact Synano.

Handling & Safety

Non-toxic and safe to handle under standard industrial conditions. Wear nitrile gloves during handling. In case of spills, wipe clean with acetone or absorbent material. Flush any skin or eye contact with water. Store sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated area between 5°C and 40°C. Shelf life exceeds five years in sealed containers.

Full handling and disposal guidance available on request. EU REACH compliant.
